Ben Horowitz is an American businessman, author, blogger, and investor. He is also a technology entrepreneur, he has co-founded the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz along with Marc Andreessen. Earlier to that he was the co-founder, CEO, and president of the software company Opsware. In the year 2007, the company was acquired by Hewlett-Packard. Ben is also the author of The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers, a book about startups, and What You Do Is Who You Are: How to Create Your Business Culture.
Early Life
Ben Horowitz is born on 13 June 1966 in London, U.K, but was raised in Berkeley California. His mother Elissa Krauthamer was a writer and his father David Horowitz was a policy advocate. Ben’s great-grandparents were Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire who arrived in the U.S. in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. Ben Horowitz has done BA in computer science from Colombia University in the year 1988 and MA in computer science from UCLA in the year 1990.

Career
Ben Horowitz’s career began with Silicon Graphics as an engineer in the year 1990. Then in the year 1995, Horowitz joined Marc Andreessen at Netscape as a product manager. From the year 1997 to 1998, he was vice president for the Directory and Security Product Line at Netscape. After the company, Netscape was acquired by AOL in 1998, he served as Vice President of AOL’s eCommerce Division.
In September 1999, Ben has co-founded Loudcloud along with Marc Andreessen, Tim Howes, and In Sik Rhee. The company offered infrastructure and application hosting services to companies and Internet customers such as Ford Motor Company, Nike, Inc., Gannett Company, News Corporation, the United States Army, and other large organizations. Ben Horowitz took the company Loudcloud public on March 9, 2001.
In June 2002, Horowitz began a transformation of Loudcloud into Opsware, which was an enterprise software company. His first step was selling Loudcloud’s core managed services business to Electronic Data Systems for $63.5 million in cash. This transaction transferred 100% of Loudcloud’s revenue to EDS, whereas the company was publicly traded on NASDAQ.
Starting with EDS as its first enterprise software customer, he grew Opsware to hundreds of enterprise customers, over $100 million in annual revenue, and 550 employees. Then in July 2007, Ben Horowitz sold Opsware to Hewlett-Packard for $1.6 billion in cash.
After the sale of Opsware to Hewlett-Packard, Horowitz then spent one year at Hewlett-Packard as Vice President and General Manager in HP Software which had responsibility for 3,000 employees and $2.8 billion in annual revenue.
